The ADH1 coding sequence was cloned from M. polymorpha and expressed under the 35S promoter in the Arabidopsis adh1 mutant; it could not complement the loss of endogenous ADH1, failing to convert acetaldehyde to ethanol. Sequence analysis showed it lacks the four residues of ethanol-processing ADHs, indicating Marchantia has no ethanol-processing ADH and MpADH1 likely acts on alternative substrates.
