Mp6g20920 MpNAC5 experimental subject M. polymorpha has a single VNS gene; Mpvns CRISPR/Cas9 knockouts and a Venus reporter were analyzed. MpVNS was not expressed in antheridia at any stage, and antheridia development and sperm release were unaffected in Mpvns mutants. Unlike PpVNS4 in moss, MpVNS plays no role in sperm release, likely because antheridia are embedded in the receptacle.
