MpUg00370 MpBPCU experimental subject The feminizer master regulator (= MpUg00370), encoding a BASIC PENTACYSTEINE transcription factor. BLASTP searches showed the ortholog is retained in monoicous R. natans but relocated to autosomal chromosome 1, while R. cavernosa and R. fluitans lack BPCU orthologs. This indicates a different system not involving feminizer and suppressor evolved in some species.
Mp1g17210 MpFGMYB experimental subject A sex-determination pathway gene whose expression is suppressed in M. polymorpha males by a cis-acting antisense lncRNA. Examined here by RNA-seq expression analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction of FGMYB genes across green plants. Orthologs were detected in all studied Ricciaceae species, located on chromosome 5 in R. fluitans, indicating retention despite sex-chromosome turnover.
Mp1g17205 MpSUF missing experimental subject SUPPRESSOR OF FEMINIZATION, a negative regulator that suppresses FGMYB expression in males from the same locus. BLAST searches of Ricciaceae genomes found SUF orthologs only in M. polymorpha, and RNA-seq detected no reads mapping to the SUF locus in the three Ricciaceae species. Its absence suggests a different sex-determination mechanism evolved in those lineages.
MpUg00040 missing sequence comparator An ancestral M. polymorpha U-chromosome gene used via BLASTP to trace U-derived gene movements; mapped to chromosome 4 in R. fluitans.
MpUg00110 missing sequence comparator An ancestral U-chromosome gene tracked by BLASTP across genomes; its ortholog maps to chr5 in R. fluitans and chr4 in R. natans.
MpUg00290 missing sequence comparator An ancestral U-chromosome gene queried by BLASTP homology searches and located on various autosomes across the Ricciaceae species.
MpUg00110 MpUg00330 missing sequence comparator An ancestral U-chromosome gene identified by BLASTP, found near the MpUg00110 ortholog on chr4 in R. natans.
