MpPHOT blue-light receptor PHOTOTROPIN Published

Associated Literature (AI-based literature mining, Beta-version)

blue-light receptor PHOTOTROPIN; Description=The plant-specific kinase phototropin (phot) is the blue-light receptor for chloroplast movements. The M. polymorpha genome encodes a single PHOT gene, MpPHOT, and its knockout line displayed none of the chloroplast photorelocation movements. Mpphot protein was localized on the plasma membrane and exhibited blue-light-dependent autophosphorylation both in vitro and in vivo. (from nomenclature)

MpPHOT is the single phototropin gene functionally studied here. Using MpphotKO knockout lines, the V594T mutant (MpphotV594T), and a kinase-inactive Citrine fusion (Mpphot-KI-Cit), the authors show Mpphot monitors the actual temperature (not temperature change) to regulate chloroplast movement, switching from cis- to trans-autophosphorylation as temperature drops to trigger the cold-avoidance response.

Blue-light receptor phototropin; loss-of-function Mpphot mutations cause epinasty. Blue- (MpPHOT) and red-light (MpPHY) signaling act antagonistically to control thallus flatness.
Hanawa M, Hirano S, Sasaki K, Takahashi H, Kodama Y. (2026) · Biochemical and biophysical research communications  research experimental subject
Phototropin; expressing plasma-membrane- (pm), cytosol- (cy), or chloroplast- (cp) targeted PHOT in an MpphotKO background showed MpPHOT can trigger the chloroplast accumulation response from multiple subcellular locations. A kinase/phospho mutant (P1081A,P1082A) was used.
Balcerowicz M. (2025) · The Plant journal : for cell and molecular biology  research experimental subject
The single-copy Marchantia phototropin MpPHOT is the focus; the paper reports it undergoes sequential cis- and trans-autophosphorylation, mediating chloroplast accumulation/avoidance responses under weak/strong blue light.
Noguchi, M., et al. (2024) · The Plant Journal  research experimental subject
The single phototropin gene of M. polymorpha; shown to switch between cis- and trans-autophosphorylation during light-induced chloroplast relocation (analyzed with knockout and point-mutant lines).
